Introduction

In the absence of a live announcer, the referee signals the players to enter the court withtwo whistles, first a short one followed by a long one. A regular foul is typically indicated by a single short, sharp whistle. However, in the case of an offensive foul, the whistle is blown several times in succession, with the last one being short and sharp. A whistle is also used to indicate a rule violation, the end of a quarter, or when the referee believes it is necessary to interrupt play.

Whistling

According to the rules, a whistle should only be blown once per violation or foul, and it should be blown sharply and clearly. The whistle should beloud and shrill, and it should not be blown after a successful shot, free throw, or when the ball becomes live.

Violations

Charging Fouls

In the case of a charging foul, the referee will blow the whistle and make the appropriate gesture to stop the game clock, making the ball dead. For unsportsmanlike fouls, disqualifying fouls, technical fouls, or double fouls, the referee will immediately make the appropriate gesture for that type of foul.

Notes

• The referee should not blow the whistle after a successful free throw or shot.
• The referees will always exchange positions on the court after calling a foul or jump ball.
• In all international competitions, English must be used to clarify announcements, if necessary.
